The Rundown on The New Vegetarian Burger That Looks and Tastes Like Meat
“The Beyond Burger™ is the world’s first plant-based burger that looks, cooks, and tastes like a fresh beef burger. It has all the juicy, meat deliciousness of a traditional burger, but comes with the upsides of a plant-based meal. The Beyond Burger™ packs 20 g of plant-based protein and has no GMOs, soy or gluten.”

What Makes a Beyond Burger?
According to Beyond Meat, the Beyond Burger is primarily made of isolated pea protein among other ingredients like canola oil and coconut oil for juiciness, and beet juice extract for colour.
What Is Everyone Saying About the Beyond Burger?
The Beyond Burger was recently launched at A&W restaurants across Canada and people are raving about it - with the exception of some in the vegan community who disapprove of how A&W's Beyond Meat Burger is prepared. Following a vegan diet means avoiding all animal products including meat, poultry, fish, eggs and dairy. A&W stated that their patties "are cooked on the same grill as beef, bacon, and eggs and may come into contact with these ingredients" and the patty is topped with an egg-based mayo, making the menu item off-limits to vegans.
Others in the plant-based camp believe this is a big step in the right direction for getting people on board with meat-free meals, and it seems to be working because meat-lovers are also buying A&W's Beyond Meat Burger. While some say it's not close enough in flavour or appearance to fool them, others are saying it pretty much looks and tastes just like a beef burger!
Where Can You Try It?
At this time Beyond Meat's products are not available to buy in stores outside of the U.S., but you can try the Beyond Meat Burger for yourself at any A&W in Canada. If you live in Kingston, Ontario check out the Beyond Burger feature at Harper's Burger Bar - made 100% vegan with a plant-based 'cheddar', smoked mushroom 'bacon', and HBB sauce on a vegan brioche bun. Yum! This menu feature retails for $17 (or you can sub your classic beef patty for the Beyond Burger patty for $13.50). The Beyond Meat Burger at A&W is more budget-friendly at $7.90.
